Do you have a deep hurt?

Last week Pastor Bruce blogged about the tragic death of Alexis Palmer - a 40-year-old woman who was found dead in a Boise canal. He shared about her background and attendance at our church and Celebrate Recovery. As the week went on, to the best of our knowledge, no one had planned a memorial service for her - so this past Monday evening we did just that. Everything went as planned and we celebrated the fact that as a believer in Christ, she was free from her struggles with sin and temptation and is now enjoying God's amazing grace! It was a special night. What we did not expect and found surprising was the extreme variety of reactions to her death. Undoubtedly, when someone dies it will take us back to our own past experiences with death and often dredges up past hurts, grief, and pain. But, as a pastor, I was surprised how quickly and powerfully it seemed to steal people’s peace away. Of course, you would expect grief and sorrow and pause for reflection at times like these, but something seemed out of balance.

What seemed evident was that many of us have a ‘surface peace.’ That is, a peace for our daily lives that does quite well for us. But, add a crisis or a death or a tragedy, and suddenly we are transported like a time machine back to a deep wound that is now being re-lived all over again—a wound that never really healed. We realized that there is a lot of buried pain in people than you might think.

The truth is, if we bury old wounds (old hurts, anger, and unforgiveness) they will surely resurface at a time of crisis in the future. Fortunately for all of us, God is in the healing business. It’s His specialty. And for some wounds ONLY God can heal us deeply and thoroughly.

God wants to help us deal with our inner demons and the unresolved pain from past hurts and trauma that has not been completely dealt with. Don't be afraid to ask Him for this - yes, it may hurt if He has to open an old wound, but in the long run the healing and peace that will fill you will bring the deep and lasting freedom He wants us to experience in this life!

Do you have a deep hurt? A wound that still hurts when you get near death?

Draw near to God and talk openly with Him about it. Find a close friend or mentor and be transparent with them about it.

Psalms 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.

Psalm 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Jeremiah 30:17 For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the LORD....

Psalms 103:1-4 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
