I am going to ask a crazy question. One I think I know the answer to. Have you every been overwhelmed by the calling of being a parent? Have you every felt inadequate or ill equipped? I know that I have. The thing that frustrates me most about parenting is that it reveals all the areas in my personal, private life that are areas of weakness. You know, like maybe I am not the most patient man in the world. So, with that revelation becoming a reality I began to look for help. But truth be told, I really didn’t want to open up. So, I turned to a book. It is safe, it doesn’t talk back, I can skip any section I want and I can walk away without being rude. As I have started the journey of reading books about parenting, it hasn’t really helped me feel more equipped. Actually, it has made me feel even worse about the list of things I need to start doing, stop doing or simply do better. That was until a few months ago when I read one of the best parenting books I have ever read.
Leslie Leyland Fields in, Parenting Is Your Highest Calling: And Eight Other Myths That Trap Us in Worry and Guilt, has a unique ability to relate to every day life - the ups and downs experienced within that life, and put words to feelings I have felt but couldn’t express. She does all of this while staying true to God’s word and reminding us that parenting really isn’t our highest calling. To love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength is not just our highest calling, but the place where we find the ability and strength to remain faithful in doing more than just raising successful children. But rather to be a part of His divine plan of making disciples that make disciples. And she did this for me while encouraging me, not overwhelming me.
If you are like me and looking for an honest voice to add to the conversation about parenting, I would pick this book up. Or if you are a parent of a child 5 and under, you might consider coming to the Mom’s group that meets the 1st Friday of each month from 11:30 to 1:30. They are starting to read and discuss this book as a community.
